Gremlin and Azure Synapse Analytics

Test how your application handles an Azure Synapse outage. Run Gremlin network experiments and reliability tests to validate reporting resilience.

Why Synapse Analytics reliability is important

Azure Synapse Analytics workloads sit behind dashboards and scheduled reports, which means their failures reach people rather than systems. Nobody gets paged. Someone eventually asks why a number looks wrong, usually well after decisions have been made from it.

The reporting layer is what makes this dangerous. Many BI tools respond to an unavailable source by displaying the last successful result, with no visual indication that it's stale. A dashboard showing yesterday's figures looks exactly like one showing today's, and the people relying on that data have no way to know the difference.

Gremlin lets you see what your reporting stack actually does. A blackhole experiment against the Synapse endpoint makes the source unavailable while a dashboard refreshes. A latency experiment pushes query times past your BI tool's timeout so you can watch what it displays.

Showing an honest error rather than stale data is a deliberate choice, and most reporting stacks default the other way unless someone has checked.

Building resilience on Synapse Analytics with Gremlin

Synapse Analytics is a dependency: a managed service that your service connects to. You can run tests by deploying the Gremlin agent or Failure Flags sidecar to a service that consumes Synapse Analytics*. Using the experiments shown to the right, you can prepare your service for Synapse Analytics failure modes, including:

  • Network outages making Synapse Analytics unavailable
  • Slow performance due to network latency
  • Expiring TLS certificates
You can also run these expert-built workflows designed to replicate real-world failure modes on Synapse Analytics:

* Testing a dependency doesn't require installing anything on it. Gremlin runs the experiment from the service that calls it, so compatibility depends on that host rather than on the dependency itself. Check our compatibility documentation for supported operating systems and platforms, or get in touch if you don't see yours.
