The Gremlin app for Dynatrace: resilience testing and reliability scoring, built on the observability you already trust

Dynatrace gives engineering teams deep, real-time visibility into every service they run. That visibility is the foundation of every effective reliability practice, and it's exactly the foundation Gremlin is built to extend. Once you can see how your distributed systems behave today, the next step is knowing how they'll behave under failure tomorrow—and to do it before those failures happen.

Today , we're making that step part of the existing workflow of Dynatrace users. The Gremlin app for Dynatrace lets you run Gremlin reliability tests, see the test impact on systems, and track forward-looking reliability scores directly inside Dynatrace using the metrics and alerts you already trust as health checks. You can trigger tests, watch their impact in real time on your Dynatrace data, and track a reliability score for each service, all in one place.

From deep visibility to a forward-looking reliability score

A modern reliability practice rests on two complementary disciplines: Observability and resilience testing. Observability tells you what's happening across your systems right now, and Dynatrace provides visibility into metrics such as uptime, response time, and incidents.

Gremlin adds a forward-looking layer on top of that data with a reliability score for each service derived from active failure testing and risk detection. Where uptime and MTTR tell you what already happened, a reliability score tells you where a service is at risk beforehat risk causes an incident. If you run that on top of your Dynatrace data, you get both: what's happening now, and how systems may behave during tested failure scenarios. So you can see everything, then prove it's resilient.

Because your Dynatrace instrumentation is already in place, Gremlin uses it as built-in health checks and safety controls. Run tests within Dynatrace

With the app installed, you can run Gremlin reliability tests on your services without leaving Dynatrace. Whether you run a service's full test suite or trigger specific tests individually, your existing Dynatrace alerts and events act as health checks to automatically stop a test the moment a service moves outside your defined thresholds.  You can watch test progress overlaid on the Dynatrace metrics you already use, so the impact of a controlled, simulated failure is visible in real time using the same view you rely on every day.

Every test result is paired with your key Dynatrace metrics, so you can see the exact effect of a controlled failure on response time, request volume, and failure rate. Each service keeps a full history of past tests with pass/fail status and the metric correlation behind each one, giving you a full picture of how a service behaves under good conditions and during failures.

This pairs the strengths of both disciplines. Dynatrace shows you precisely how a service is performing, then Gremlin turns how it behaves under failure into a reliability score you can track, benchmark, and report on.

How to get started

The Gremlin app is available today in the Dynatrace Hub. You'll need an active Gremlin account, a Dynatrace SaaS environment, Gremlin and Dynatrace agents deployed to your infrastructure, and a Dynatrace API key to connect the two. The app builds on the existing Gremlin–Dynatrace integration, adding a native UI and reliability scores inside Dynatrace dashboards.
